Know how to store foods for a long time during lockdown

Due to the lockdown people are not able to get out of the house, due to which most people have to store food and drink items. In such a situation, most people do not know how to store many things properly. On the other hand, if we store  fruits, vegetables, spices, herbs, millet or grains in the best way, we will not only save ourselves from going out of the house, but also avoid wastage of food. So let’s know how can store these food items during lockdown and save them from being wasted.

WHO told how to stay active and healthy at home during Coronavirus

Potatoes, sweet potato, garlic and onion

These are one of the main qualities in our Indian diet. Store them in a dry cool place with good ventilation. Do not store them in the refrigerator. If you have extra potatoes and sweet potatoes, make chips, potato cutlets and sweet potato patties. While roasting it in half, it can also be used by putting it in toast. Extra garlic and onion,  can be stored with lemon or vinegar. Also roast garlic and use it in your vegetable.

Ginger

Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and we all need it to enhance our immunity. Ginger can best be stored in the refrigerator’s vegetable drawer. It will stay fresh for a week or two. If you have extra ginger, make ginger vinegar past and use it. At the same time, keep the ginger dry and make powder and store it.

Fresh turmeric

It is considered a sacred spice of all spices. Like ginger, it is well stored in the fridge  if you want them to store longer. Plant turmeric  in a pot, you will be surprised to see a new plant in a few months. Apart from this, you can also make turmeric pickle or dry it in the sun and use it by making fresh turmeric powder at home.

Coriander and Mint

When all the herbs purchased should be placed in a glass with water, along with their stalks, it does not spoil the herbs. First remove the rubber bands from these herbs and put them in a glass filled with water. In this way, it helps to keep them fresh for 15 days. You can keep them in the fridge or on your kitchen bench. Make sure that you take care of them by changing the water during these 15 days. If you have more of these, then dry them well to use them. You can also give them as herbal drinks or tea, salads and soups and and cooked vegetables.

Bananas, Oranges, Lemons and Apples

Bananas and apples keep well at room temperature for a week. For a banana it depends on the ripening of the banana, a raw banana will take about a week to ripen at room temperature. Oranges and apples should be stored at room temperature. But they are kept in the refrigerator for a long time. My suggestion for all extra bananas is to slice them thinly and place them in a freezer bag and keep them in the freezer. Use these frozen bananas in smoothies and milkshakes, make cakes or pancakes with some bananas. Additional apples can be used in making apple sauce and can be eaten with muffins. Apple slices with peanut butter makes an ideal snack, you can also make cakes by apple. In addition, additional citrus fruits can be used to make jams, sauces, sorbets or ice creams.

Mango

Once cooked, raw mangoes can be stored in the refrigerator. Otherwise, the raw mango should be stored in a paper bag at room temperature until ripe. When more common, slices can be stored in the freezer. At the same time, mango chips, chutney, jam and many more things can also be made from them. Also when ripe, pears can be stored in the refrigerator.

oil

Oil should be kept away from light. Store it in a dark glass bottle in the pantry or in the cupboard.

Nuts and seeds

Always store nuts and seeds in an air tight container in a cool, dark place. It can be stored in the refrigerator in case of excess nuts and can also be used in baking. Walnut powder can be added to flour or made into muffins or cakes. At the same time, it can also be used in making milkshakes and lassi.

Eggs

Eggs should always be placed in the carton they are purchasing and they should be kept inside the refrigerator. If you want to know if your eggs are fresh? Pour a glass of water and drop the eggs slowly, if the eggs float on top of the glass it means that the eggs have dried but if they have sunk they are still fresh. If you have extra eggs, then bake your cakes, muffins, pies, biscuits or cookies.

Strawberries and Berries

Make sure that you have removed the rotten strawberries from the box before storing them in the fridge. Then wash and dry it well and store again. A single rotten berry can spoil the entire package. Then store them in an air tight container. If you have an overdose of berries, you can dry and powder them and use it later. It can also be used in yogurt, smoothies, milkshakes.
